Laila’s Legacy was founded with a mission to ensure that every homeless dog – including those with behavioral or physical challenges – that comes through our doors has a chance at a better life while educating the public on breed bias, individualistic training, and the importance of spay-neuter to lower the impact of returned, rehomed, and abandoned animals in shelters across the United States.
The DMV (DC, Maryland, & Virginia) region is one of the few remaining areas with breed bias towards ‘bully breeds’. This includes a county with a ‘Pitbull Ban’ restricting ownership or adoption of any dog deemed a ‘bully breed’ in the county. Additionally, every year only 2.5% of the 420,000+ Community Services Programs offered by United States shelters & rescues were supporting Behavioral Services. Only 1.5% of those same services programs were supporting Rehome Services. With over 50% of rehomes and returns a result of behavioral challenges, no longer can we ignore the impact that a lack of education and support for adopters experiencing behavioral challenges has on the lives of dogs in our community.
This is a community that desperately needs our help, and Laila’s Legacy Animal Rescue is here to do so! Our first two years will be focused solely on supporting our local community shelters — pulling from the county with the current breed ban and other counties with high intake numbers due to the overflow from breed bias in the community, neighboring county, and rehomes or returns. Additionally, we’ll be partnering with local trainers to provide the best training we can for our animals, and providing resources or connections for our adopters. From there we will begin expanding our reach, with a goal to double our adoptions. We will be able to continue our support of the community while also helping shelters in the rural south, Colorado, and California – which all have recently ended breed bans or high numbers of shelter intakes due to a lack of spay & neuter programming. Finally, in year four we will build our website to create a resource hub for any and all owners of bully breeds or behaviorally challenged dogs to help increase the number of dogs staying in their homes!
We’re proud to say that 100% of your donation will go to animal care which means every dollar you donate will go towards saving a life. This is why your donation is so important.
Thanks to Chappy & Friends, we’re collecting donations to create a foundation for our launch with a goal to raise $50,000 by August and our first transport no later than September of 2023! As a fledgling rescue, we are run by a small yet mighty team of volunteers, passionate about helping a group of animals otherwise neglected with the experience necessary to support these animals. We can only reach our goals and save these dogs with YOUR help. Thank you so much for your consideration and donations!
